Cages for Ferrets
Giving your ferret an appropriate cage with toys isn't just for the ferret's or your entertainment. Although
that's a good reason, a good cage and accessories will keep your ferret buddy safe and healthy.
Ferrets will sleep about 18 hours a day, but the other 6 hours they are normally extremely busy. Many ferret
caretakers will let them out of their cages to romp around the house. As long as the house has been properly prepared for ferrets that's OK. But
when not closely supervised, it is best for the ferret and your sanity for them to be caged.

What makes a good ferret cage?
Size is the first factor. Ferrets need plenty of space to move around and explore. They need their food and
water located away from the litter box. The absolute minimum would be 12 by 24 inches, and that would only be suitable for transportation or for
use when recovering from an illness.
A larger, more complex cage is better. A good ferret cage will have tubes to crawl through, ramps, sleeping
hammocks and soft bedding. The more intricate features will entertain both you and your ferret buddy and keep him mentally active and fit.
Ferrets are very curious and exploratory creatures and need lots to investigate.
Ferret Cages are available in many styles and sizes and some can be attached to each other to expand the space for your ferret family. But be
certain the mesh is small enough to prevent your ferret from getting his head through and escaping or even getting caught. Male ferrets have
slightly larger heads, but males and females heads are about as wide as their shoulders. This makes them very adept at squirming through
small spaces.
Stainless steel is the best material. Coated wire can be used as long as the coating is of a high quality and
non rusting. Ferrets will chew on everything in their environment and can get intestinal blockage or poisoning from plastic coatings. And look
for a solid floor. It is more comfortable for the ferrets to walk on and easier to clean.
Never use hamster or bird cages. These are much too small. And also never use fish aquariums regardless of
size as they do not allow sufficient ventilation. Moisture and heat will buildup and promote the growth of bacteria. The heat itself is harmful
to ferrets. They should always be kept between 80°F (26,5°C) and 45°F (7°C).
Ferrets are a unique species, with their own special needs and behavior. A proper and roomy cage will keep
them safe and comfortable.
